5G and the demand for fiber

This web page reveals the incredible pace of 5G deployments. In South Korea it is claimed that 21% of all mobile traffic is now running on a 5G network. South Korea benefited from an extensive wired network capable of supporting backhaul needs, but for many other parts of the world extensive networks do not exist. The need for high bandwidth, low latency front and backhaul links continues to grow and this is an area where fiber makes a lot of sense (for more details, see this white paper from Telecoms Tracker). For converged operators deploying fiber for both access networks and x-haul networks significant savings can be realised by considering both networks in the network design. GE Digital’s automated fiber design solutions enable operators to design networks considering all locations and demands simultaneously so benefiting from the savings of shared infrastructure that are possible.
